What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a neurological condition that can affect a person's ability to read, write, and spell accurately and fluently, despite often having average or above-average intelligence and receiving adequate learning time. It is a lifelong condition that often becomes apparent when children start learning to read.

Dyslexic individuals typically struggle with recognising and processing phonemes, the smallest units of sound in language, which makes it challenging for them to decode and understand written words. This can lead to difficulties in reading, spelling, and writing. Working memory, processing speed and orthographic skills can contribute to the impact of dyslexia.

Dyslexia frequently co-occurs with one or more other developmental difficulties, including developmental language disorder, dyscalculia, ADHD, and developmental coordination disorder.

Breakthrough Dyslexia can help!

If you have dyslexia or another specific learning difficulty (SpLD), your difficulties can go beyond reading, writing and spelling. You might struggle with organisation, memorising information, timekeeping, sequencing your thoughts or ideas, concentration, maths or coordination.

Impact of dyslexia

The impact of dyslexia on an individual can be significant and extensive. It may affect their self-esteem and confidence, as they often encounter frustration and academic difficulties that differ from those experienced by their peers. Beyond academic challenges, dyslexia can also affect a child's social and emotional well-being. Therefore, it is essential for educators, parents, and caregivers to provide appropriate support, early intervention, and specialised instruction tailored to the child's individual needs. With effective strategies and interventions, many children with dyslexia are capable of developing strong reading skills and achieving success both academically and personally. This highlights the importance of timely recognition and targeted support for this condition.

"Highly recommend"

Caroline at Breakthrough Dyslexia has been a fantastic support to me throughout the completion of my degree at Queen’s. Her help, encouragement, and support has been truly appreciated. I especially valued her flexibility in working around my schedule and her willingness to genuinely listen to what I felt would be the most beneficial type of support, which is something most tutors don’t understand the importance of. I would highly recommend her to anyone who feels they could benefit from support, whether it's big or small! Thank you Caroline for being such a wonderful, positive and easy going person to work with.

"I loved the personalised support"

From the outset, Caroline was incredibly patient, understanding, and, most importantly, knowledgeable about dyslexia and ADHD and how they affect learning. She took the time to assess my specific needs and challenges to develop a custom plan that leveraged my strengths while addressing my weaknesses.

One of the most valuable aspects of this support was learning how to organise my study time and materials in a way that made sense to me. This has led to a noticeable improvement in my confidence and a decrease in the stress and anxiety that often accompanied my study sessions in the past.
